چکیده

ÐThe performance of a mutual exclusion algorithm is measured by the number of messages exchanged per critical section execution and the delay between successive executions of the critical section. There is a message complexity and synchronization delay trade-off in mutual exclusion algorithms. The Lamport algorithm and the Ricart-Agrawal algorithm both have a synchronization delay of T (T is the average message delay), but their message complexity is O…N†. Maekawa's algorithm reduces the message complexity to O… N p †; however, it increases the synchronization delay to 2T . After Maekawa's algorithm, many quorum-based mutual exclusion algorithms have been proposed to reduce the message complexity or the increase the resiliency to site and communication link failures. Since these algorithms are Maekawa-type algorithms, they also suffer from the long synchronization delay. In this paper, we propose a delay-optimal quorum-based mutual exclusion algorithm which reduces the synchronization delay to T and still has a low message complexity of O…K† (K is the size of the quorum which can be as low as logN). A correctness proof and a detailed performance analysis are provided. Index TermsÐQuorum, synchronization delay, distributed mutual exclusion, fault tolerance.

Minimizing the Maximum Delay for Reaching Consensus in Quorum-Based Mutual Exclusion Schemes

ÐThe use of quorums is a well-known approach to achieving mutual exclusion in distributed computing systems. This approach works based on a coterie, a special set of node groups where any pair of the node groups shares at least one common node. Each node group in a coterie is called a quorum. Mutual exclusion is ensured by imposing that a node gets consensus from all nodes in at least one of th...

An Improved Token-Based and Starvation Free Distributed Mutual Exclusion Algorithm

Distributed mutual exclusion is a fundamental problem of distributed systems that coordinates the access to critical shared resources. It concerns with how the various distributed processes access to the shared resources in a mutually exclusive manner. This paper presents fully distributed improved token based mutual exclusion algorithm for distributed system. In this algorithm, a process which...

Delay - Optimal Quorum Consensus

Given a set of nodes S, a coterie is a set of pairwise intersecting subsets of S. Each element in a coterie is called a quorum. Mutual exclusion in a distributed system can be achieved if each request is required to get consensus from a quorum of nodes. This technique of quorum consensus is also used for replicated distributed database systems, and bicoteries and wr-coteries have been deened to...

Two New Quorum Based Algorithms for Distributed Mutual Exclusion

Two novel suboptimal algorithms for mutual exclusion in distributed systems are presented. One is based on the modi cation of Maekawa's grid based quorum scheme. The size of quorums is approximately p 2 p N where N is the number of sites in a network, as compared to 2 p N of the original method. The method is simple and geometrically evident. The second one is based on the idea of di erence set...
